The Teign Valley and its Geological Problems
Trans. Dev. Assoc., XXXV, (1903), map, pp. 631-645.
by
Harford J. Lowe, F.G.S.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s 1903 Sidmouth meeting. The Teign valley is perhaps the most dramatically steep and consistently wooded valley in Devon, thus providing with its complex topology, a number of difficult geological questions. To quote the Paper’s author, “its physical features are striking and somewhat anomalous; while the mineralogist and geologist can find within its borders unusual scope for their studies, and many problems to solve”. Association member Harford John Lowe (1852–1934), a Torquay schoolteacher and Fellow of the Geological Society, eventually played a minor, though important role in the heated tensions that existed between those geologists who regarded themselves as professionals and those with private means for whom geology was a passion rather than a profession. Lowe’s paper provides a geological survey of the Teign basin’s complex physical features, and addresses some of the questions these generate. For the genealogist, the paper provides a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geology.
