Devonian Literature: Its Special Wants

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol.  XIV, (1882), pp. 525-528.

by

W.H.K. Wright, Public Librarian, Plymouth

Prepared by Michael Steer

The brief Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1882, Crediton meeting. For the genealogist, the paper, with its focus on the absence at that time of an updated bibliography of Devon’s literature, is a treasury of names associated with our county’s unique liberal arts. The author, William Henry Kearley WRIGHT was born at Plymouth September 15, 1844. It was primarily due to Mr. Wright's advocacy that in 1884 the famous statue of Sir Francis DRAKE was placed on the Hoe at Plymouth. Mr. Wright’s obituary may be accessed in GENUKI.The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
