The Duchy of Cornwall on Dartmoor

Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1889, Vol. XXI, pp. 289-299.

by

W.F. Collier

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1889 Tavistock meeting. The Duchy of Cornwall is one of two royal duchies in England, the other is the Duchy of Lancaster. The reigning monarch’ eldest son obtains possession of the duchy and the title of 'Duke of Cornwall' at birth or when his parent succeeds to the throne. About half of the Duchy is on Dartmoor, with other large possessions in Herefordshire, Somerset and almost all of the Scilly Isles. Duchy administration is regulated by the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall (Accounts) Act 1838, requiring the Treasury's supervision with its accounts presented to both Houses of Parliament. The Paper’s author, Association member Mr. Collier, has written prolifically on a variety of issues connected with Dartmoor. The article, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
