Third Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee
by
Rev S. Baring Gould
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXVIII. (1896),plates, maps. pp. 174-199.
Prepared by Michael Steer
This lavishly illustrated paper was presented at the Association’s July 1896 Ashburton meeting. It is for the genealogist, a treasury of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique history. This committee was initially formed by members of the Association’s Barrow Committee and continued annually until its 11th Report in 1906. It has sometimes been confused with the Dartmoor Preservation Association, (founded 1883). Work undertaken by committee members since the preceding report included”:
1. Whiten Ridge. Exploration of four hut circles
2. Legis Tor. Eleven huts excavated.
3. Rifle Range, Har Tor. Seventeen huts explored.
4. Raddick Hill. Eleven huts opened.
5. Lake Head Hill. Kistvaens examined.
6. Gosdon. Examination of stone rows and cairns.
7. Whitmoorstone Circle, Fallen stones reset.
The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers
Committee Members.
