Westcountry Geological Problems. Part II. The Dartmoor Granite
Trans. Devon Assoc. Vol. XXIX (1897), pp. 390-424.
by
A. R. Hunt, M.A., F.L.S., F.G.S.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1897 Kingsbridge meeting. In his engaging, and at times entertainingly adversarial manifesto, the author addresses the knotty problem of Dartmoor granite’s mode of origin. As usual, Mr. Hunt is a master of academic in-fighting. His sparring is complicated and perhaps dampened on this occasion by his sparring partner Mr. R.N. Worth’s sudden demise. This important paper provides, for the genealogist, a treasury of names associated with some of the earliest research into our county’s unique geology. The author, Arthur Roope Hunt, (1843-1914), was President of Torquay Natural History Society (1879-1881). His extensive obituary is available in GENUKI. His portrait is available here. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
