The Church of All Saints, East Budleigh, pt. III.

Prepared by Michael Steer
An early 12th century charter indicates that All Saints Chuch was given to the Church of St Katharine of Posloe (Polsloe, Exeter). The Benedictine order of Posloe nuns lived in East Budleigh in a priory for the next 350 years until the estate was purchased by Mr Duke. All Saints was enlarged during Bishop Lacy's episcopate about 1420. The north and south aisles were added, as were the handsome columns of Beer stone. Budleigh was in those days a thriving wealthy merchants town, due to the seaport of Budleigh Haven at the mouth of the River Otter. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
