Ancient Exeter and its Trade
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 5 (1872), pp. 90-106.
by
Sir John Bowring
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, read at the Association's July 1872 Exeter meeting, focuses on the ancient city, and on how it served as an important link in a marketing chain that connected local, regional, and overseas trade. Although small by most standards (the population stood at around 3,100 in 1377), Exeter was the largest town in south-western England and has long played a central role in the marketing hierarchy of the region. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of California Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
