Memoir of the Examination of Three Barrows
at Broad Down, Farway, near Honiton.
Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. II, Part II, (1868), illus., pp. 619-649.
by
The Rev. R. Kirwan, M.A., Rector of Gittisham
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1868 Honiton meeting. The tumuli cluster at Farway on the hills to the south and east of Honiton, form one of the most significant and well-preserved non-moorland barrow complexes in South West Britain. Two major excavation campaigns have been performed on the barrows. The first, in the 1860’s is described in the present lavishly illustrated paper and occurred under the auspices of the Reverend Kirwan. His important paper was later reproduced in the Archaeological Journal. Local antiquarian Peter Orlando Hutchinson was a close observer of these early excavations and actually participated in some. He subsequently produced an account, in many instances scathing, of Mr. Kirwan’s methods. An informative and comprehensive paper on this series of complex archaeological projects, by A.M. Jones appears in The Proceedings of the Devon Archaeological Society, 2008 and is available as a free download. For the genealogist, the Paper is a cornucopia of names associated with some of the earliest important research into our county’s unique prehistory. The present Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
