Devon Genealogies

This set of pages is the main starting point in GENUKI/Devon for information relating to individual families: it provides alphabetised lists of published and selected on-line narrative genealogical accounts that are not evidently linked to a particular Devon town or parish. GENUKI being organised on a geographical basis, information about a family that is associated with a particular Devon location is given, under Genealogy, in the relevant town or parish page. To aid locating such information this alphabetically-arranged set of pages provide links to such town and parish pages.

However, in keeping with general GENUKI policy, no attempt is made to provide information, either here or in town or parish pages, concerning simple online pedigrees, such as those created automatically from GEDCOM files, since there are many specialised online archives for such material - see Cyndi's List of Searchable Online Databases.

Proposed additions to these listings are most welcome. In the case of published information, full bibliographical details are requested. For journal articles these should include page numbers, as well as volume and/or issue numbers, year of publication and of course the journal name. In the case of books (a term used here to include typescripts and manuscripts that have been lodged in a major library), as well as such information as author, title, publisher, year and place of publication, and no. of pages, it is useful to have the ISBN if there is one, and an indication of a library holding the book and the call number assigned to it. (A very brief indication of the contents of the article or book, such as the main family name or names covered, where and when they lived, is also requested if this information is not evident from the title.) The main information needed concerning an online narrative genealogical account of a particular family is the URL, and the name of the person responsible for the pages. Ideally this URL will be one that is within a permanently available web-site, and that is not intended to change. Preference will be given to accounts that provide extensive information about the history of the family concerned and their location, i.e. information that is likely to be of some general interest to Devon genealogists and family historians.

Note: These pages should be used in conjuction with the Biographies pages, since the decision as to how some items should best be classified is rather uncertain.
