Book of Hartland
by
R. Pearse Chope
Devonshire Press, Torquay, 1940
Facsimile edition, limited printing in 1995
Index provided by Liz Stirling
Preface to the facsimile edition:
"The Book of Hartland by R. Pearse Chope (1862-1938), edited by Isobel Thornley, lecturer in History at University College, London, who subsequently died in an air raid, was published in the dark days of 1940. It rapidly became a rarity not only because of the small number of copies printed but also because of its distinguished quality. It was highly praised by the doyen of Devonshire studies, Professor W.G. Hoskins, who called it 'an almost model history of an exceptionally interesting parish' (Devon, HarperCollins), and is frequently referred to by other historians of the county.
This facsimile edition, published by the Parochial Church Council of Hartland for the benefit of the Church of St. Nectan at Stoke, Hartland, of which Pearse Chope had been a generous benefactor, is more than a tribute to one of Hartland's most distinguished citizens. Interest in local history flourishes in Devon as vigorously as elsewhere, and it is hoped that his work will now become known to a new generation of students and enthusiasts.
One or two chapters, for example that describing the Parish Church, have inevitably been superceded in part by changes since 1940, but the great majority represent the fruits of Pearse Chope's researches in a wide variety of original documents, and have withstood the test of time. Particularly illuminating are those on the early history of Hartland Abbey and the Church of St. Nectan. The original illustrations, which were chosen by him, have been retained.
The continuing interest by the Chope family in this parish and this edition is gratefully acknowledged."
