Index to

The Fauna of Devon, Part XII - Birds

by

E. Parfitt

Trans. Devon Assoc. Vol. VIII. (1876), 245-310.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1876, Ashburton meeting. Specimens listed in the catalogue as an appendix to the Paper were collected in identified locations throughout Devon by a majority of those named in the index. Edward Parfitt (1820-1893), naturalist and self-made scientist, was born 17 Oct. 1820. He initially became gardener to a number of Norfolk estates, and subsequently went on a voyage for scientific purposes. He was wrecked near the Cape of Good Hope, and an enforced stay in the colony intensified his taste for botany and entomology. Returning to England, he became in 1848, gardener to John Milford, Coaver House, Exeter. In 1859 he was appointed curator to the Archaeological and Natural History Society of Somerset. He died 15 Jan. 1893. Mr. Parfitt contributed numerous papers to the 'Transactions' of the Devonshire Association, 'Annals and Magazine of Natural History,' 'Entomological Magazine,' 'Naturalist,' and 'Transactions' of the Royal Microscopical Society. His obituary is available through GENUKI Devon here. The catalogue is a rather gruesome record of mass bird extinction in the name of scientific research. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
