The Fauna of Devon: Hymenoptera -
Family Ichneumonidæ, Section Pupivora
by
E. Parfitt
Trans. Devon Assoc. Vol. XII. (1881), pp. 241-292.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1881, Dawlish meeting. Specimens listed in the catalogue as an appendix to the Paper were collected in specifically identified locations throughout Devon by most of those individuals recorded in the index. For the genealogist, the paper is a treasure house of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. Hymenoptera are highly specialized insects with complete metamorphosis that include the bees, wasps, ants, ichneumon flies, sawflies, gall wasps, and related forms, often associate in large colonies with complex social organization. The Ichneumonidae are also known to naturalists as ichneumon wasps, Darwin wasps, or ichneumonids and are a family of parasitoid wasps. Those classed as Pupivora destroy the larvæ and pupæ of other insects. The author’s obituary is available in GENUKI. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
