The Antiquity of Man in the South-West of England
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol 7 (1875), pp. 64-74.
by
W. Pengelly, F.R.S., F.G.S. etc.
Prepared by Michael Steer
This paper was presented at the Association’s July 1867 Barnstaple meeting. It is a fascinating mixture of empiricism and judicious speculation. Its celebrated author was a self-taught mathematician and natural scientist who had moved to Torquay in 1836, initially to open a school, but later lectured on astronomy, geology, palaeontology and archaeology. He was interested in the geology of Cornwall and Devon, particularly its caves and their connection to human prehistory. His succinct biography including a handsome portrait is available at the Geological Society website. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
