The steeplechase originated in Ireland in the 18th century as an analogue to the cross country horse races that went from church steeple to church steeple. The sport became formally organised in 1866 with the formation of the National Hunt Committee that began to issue licenses to riders. Weatherbys today provides British Horseracing with its central administration, acts as its bank, and maintains the founding Thoroughbred breed register. They have been involved in British horse racing since 1770 and provide various administration services under contract to the British Horseracing Authority. Weatherby's Racing Calendar is sometimes called "Racing's Bible". In the 1867-8 season, steeplechase meetings were held at:
