The West in English History
By A.L. Rowse
London: Hodder and Stoughton (1949)
Indexed by Michael Steer
The book presents eighteen essays, each one a chapter. The essays were originally broadcast as a series by BBC Western Region. At the time of the broadcasts, the population of the western peninsula of England was approximately four million. The aim of the series was to reflect the life, achievements and history of the West Country, as a region of great diversity. The book's foreword points out that the West Country "bears the marks of Mediterranean, Celtic, Roman, West Saxon and Norman influences". These are apparent in "its earthworks, mines, castles and cathedrals. It was the birthplace of metalliferous mining and in more recent times of the factory system. It has played a leading part in England's maritime history, and in England's emergence as a united nation".
