Prepared by Michael Steer

This paper was presented at the Association’s July 1903 Sidmouth meeting. By far the most ambitious project initiated by the Association and perhaps its first major enterprise, was the transcription, translation from mediaeval Latin and publication of one of Exeter Cathedral Library’s greatest treasures, the Exeter or Exon Domesday. This book is believed to be a preliminary draft for the south western counties of the definitive Exchequer Domesday, and relates to Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and rather more than half of Dorset, with a single Wiltshire entry.  A working committee of seven was established in 1877, with Robert Dymond chairing and Joshua Brooking Rowe as secretary. An interim report appeared in 1880, and the work itself appeared in nine parts between 1884 and 1892 as extra volumes to the Transactions, and were eventually combined in two volumes in 1892. A large number of textual analysis papers were produced by Committee members during this process, of which this paper is a typical example. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
