Geological Notes on the South-Western Line between Lydford and Devonport

Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1889, Vol. XXI, pp. 261-288.

by

R.N. Worth F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1889 Tavistock meeting and provides the genealogist with a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique Geology. The line between Lydford and Devonport is particularly attractive to stratigraphical geologists, because it includes a disputed frontier between the Carboniferous and Devonian systems, while affording the petrologist an unusual variety of igneous rocks to study. The construction in 1859 of the new South Devon and Tavistock Railway line linking Plymouth with Tavistock, following the higher ground commanding the valleys of the Tavy and the Tamar throughout most of its 23-mile course, supplied unrivalled opportunity for empirical research. Mr. Worth’s Paper is based on observations taken during repeated visits while the work was still in progress. The article, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
