Fourth Report of the Barrow Committee

by

R.N. Worth, F.G.S. etc.

Trans. Devon Assoc. 1882, Vol XIV, illus., pp.152-158.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The report was presented at the Association’s July 1881 Dawlish meeting. This particularly important working Committee was formed with the express purpose of collecting and recording facts relating to Barrows in Devonshire, exclusive of Dartmoor and taking steps for their investigation. The Committee at its first meeting having recorded the Barrow literature of the County resolved that its next step was the collection of facts concerning the Barrows that still exist, and such investigations as had not hitherto been permanently recorded. The Committee in this its third report recommended that in their reappointment the limitation of their operations with regard to Dartmoor be omitted. In their opinion, no adequate conclusions could be formed concerning the Barrows of the county, if so large and peculiarly important an area was excluded from their investigation. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
