Historical Record of the Forty-sixth or the South Devonshire Regiment of Foot
By Richard Cannon
London, Parker, Furnivall, Parker (1851) xix, 76p, 2 col plates.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
Under a Horse Guards order, dated 1 January 1836, signifying the royal command that an historic account of the services of every regiment in the British Army should be published under the superintendence of the Adjutant-General, the work of compilation was entrusted to Richard Cannon, at that time principal clerk in the Adjutant-General's office. During the ensuing 17 years, historical records of all then existing regiments of cavalry, and of 42 regiments of infantry of the line, were thus issued "by authority", all of which were prepared under Cannon's direction, except the history of the Royal Horse Guards. The South Devonshire Regiment was raised at Newcastle in 1741 as the 57th Regiment of Foot, ranked as the 46th Regiment of Foot in 1751, and took a county title as the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot in 1782. In 1749 the Regiment was stationed in Ireland, where they remained for eight years. While they were there, the Seven Years' War broke out, and they were relocated to Nova Scotia. During their time in Canada, the 46th were involved in several major battles. The Regiment was amalgamated into the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in 1881.
