This paper, presented at the Association's July 1884 Newton Abbot meeting, explores the origin and arms of Devon's heroic Francis Drake and his relation to Plymouth, of which he was Mayor. Drake was sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician. He carried out the second circumnavigation of the world, from 1577-80. Elizabeth I awarded him a knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588, and died of dysentery in 1596 after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico. His exploits were legendary, making him a hero to the English but a pirate to the Spaniards to whom he was known as El Draque. King Philip II was said to have offered a reward of 20,000 ducats for his life. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
