President’s Address - the Parson’s Steam Turbine Generator

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXV (1903), pp. 45-65.

by

Sir Edgar Vincent, K.C.M.G., M.P. etc.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was delivered at its July 1903 Sidmouth meeting. On that occasion, Sir Edgar described and discussed the Parson’s Steam Turbine Generator in some detail. This highly innovative machine was forerunner of the turbogenerators that today provide most of the world's electricity. It was invented and produced by Charles Parsons, who promoted the turbine as a smaller and more efficient alternative to the steam engines used in the final decades of the 19th and early years of the last century. The Association’s President for 1903, Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount D'Abernon, GCB, GCMG, PC, FRS. (19 August 1857- 1 November 1941) was a politician, diplomat, art collector and author. A fulsome biography, with portrait and coat of arms is available here. Sir Edgar’s Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
