Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 46, (1914) pp. 156-175.

Tavistock traces its history to at least AD 961 when Tavistock Abbey was founded. Its most famous son is Sir Francis Drake, The abbey of Saint Mary and Saint Rumon was founded in 961 by Ordgar, Earl of Devon. After destruction by Danish raiders in 997 it was restored, and among its famous abbots was Aldred, who crowned Harold II and William I. He died Archbishop of York. In 1105 a Royal Charter was granted by Henry I to the monks of Tavistock for a weekly "Pannier Market" that still takes place today. In 1116 a three-day fair was also granted to mark the feast of Saint Rumon. Another tradition is the annual "Goosey" fair each October. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
