The History of the Discovery of Fossil Fish in the Devonian Rocks of Devon and Cornwall
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. II, Part II, (1868), pp. 423-442.
by
E. W. Pengelly, F.R.S., F.G.S. Etc.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1868 Honiton meeting. It is another stimulating offering to early Association members by its celebrated author, during a time of intellectual ferment over the origin of species. The Devonian Period in Geology is sometimes called the “Age of Fishes” because of the diverse, abundant, and, in some cases, bizarre types of fish found in Devonian period seas. Early geologists Adam Sedgwick and Roderick Murchison proposed the name in 1839 as a descriptor for the marine rocks they discovered in southwestern England. For the genealogist, the Paper is a treasure house of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geology. The present Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
