Obituary of Canon Crosse

The Rev. Arthur Bayly CROSSE, canon of Norwich, died yesterday at his residence in the Cathedral precincts, aged 78, from a heart affection with which he was stricken in April while paying a visit to Bournemouth.

The fourth son of J.G. CROSSE, M.D., F.R.S., of Norwich, he was privately educated and then proceeded to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, taking his B.A. degree in 1853. Ordained deacon in 1853 and priest in the following year, he was appointed curate of Trimingham, where he became rector in 1858. He was afterwards curate of St. John, Great Yarmouth, rector of Kessingland, and chaplain at Biarritz, in 1881 vicar of St. George, Barrow-in-Furness, and in 1882 Archdeacon of Furness and honorary canon of Carlisle. In 1893, on the nomination of Lord HERSCHELL, he succeeded to the canonry of Norwich rendered vacant by the death of Canon NESBIT, and at the same time accepted the small benefice of St. Peter, Permountergate, but increasing years compelled him to resign this in 1898. He founded a guild of ex-chorister boys and took great interest in the welfare of postmen and telegraph messengers. A Liberal in politics, but tending in later years towards the High Church party, he took part more than once in united services with the Nonconformists.

Mrs CROSSE survives her husband, and of the five sons one is vicar of Chesterfield and another vicar of St. James, Barrow-in-Furness.
