It was founded in 1848 according to the Religious Census of 1851. This is also marked on the Tithe Map of 1838 as "Dissenting Congregation" Chapel. Note that there is no sign of former only a Baptist Chapel in directories of 1845, 1858, 1865 and 1868 which might be the same place? It closed before 1877.
The Independent churches were ones in which each congregation was autonomous, upholding the principles of independence. In the 19th century they became known as Congregational.
In 1972 the Congregational church joined with the English Presbyterian church to become the United Reformed Church. Some Congregational churches though did not take this path and became members of the Congregational Federation.
