The following are a List of the In Memorium notices posted to the Staffordshire, Potteries
& Black Country mail lists, to honour those of our Staffordshire forebears who,
during the 20th century, gave their lives in defence of their Country.

They gave their tomorrow for our today.
We will not forget.

Henry Felix JONES
Private 1st Bn., Worcestershire Regiment
died on Wednesday 1 August 1917 . Age 23 .
Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, 28, New John St. West, Birmingham;
husband of Alice Maud Stevens (formerly Jones), of 3 Block, 70, Paddington St., Hockley, Birmingham.
Cemetery: DIVISIONAL COLLECTING POST CEMETERY AND EXTENSION Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium

Harry W FRANKLIN
of the 4th Worcester's who was killed
on the 6th of August 1915, at the Dardanelles aged 29
also his brother who was killed in the trenches in France
I never found out his proper name as he signed up under a false name
and was under age.

John Benjamin FRANKLIN,
who was in the RAF in both the first and second World Wars
He was a regular in the RAF, after leaving stayed on as a reservist
until the outbreak of the Second World War and was one of the first to
be called up. He was injured at Dunkirk but carried on until the end of
the war and finished in 1946.
He was never well after that and was given a very small pension for the
injures he received, he died in 1965.

Private Samuel George PATENT
only son of Mr and Mrs G Patent . of LLanfair House Rood End Road,
who died with my uncle ( H W Franklin) at Dardanelles on the 6th August 1915 aged 20,
Private Charlie EVITTS formally of 62 Popes Lane Oldbury .
died on the 5th of August in France.

Private Benjamin David JACKSON 9930 part of the 7th battalion South Staffs, who died Tuesday 28th November 1916.
He is buried at Contay British Cemetery, Contay, France.

21644 Private Leslie TROMAN, 4th BN., Worcestershire Regiment,
who died on Monday 18th September 1916. Age 21.
The son of Albert TROMAN of Halesowen.
Buried at Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium.

4711 Private Edward TINSLEY, 1st BN., Coldstream Guards,
who died on Saturday 31st October 1914 of his wounds. Aged 32.
The son of Thomas and Mary TINSLEY 207, Walsall Street, West Bromwich.
Buried at Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Belgium.

A cousin, Lance Corporal William HARPIN of "B" Squadron, 3rd Hussars (King's Own).
18 years of age, of Bilston. Killed on October 4, 1915 in the battle of Artois
during attacks near the town of Loos where British forces lost 60,000 men
killed or wounded during September and October, 1915

STAFFORDSHIRE LIST

John MALLOY, Jr. of Hawk Run, PA was 21 when he registered
for the draft in June of 1917.
His father, John Malloy, Sr. was born in Walsall Wood in 1869 to Martin & Mary Rowe Malloy.
Mary Rowe Malloy was born in Walsall Wood as were her parents, William & Hannah Cresswell Rowe.
Due to influenza an abscess developed in his head causing his death Feb. 7, 1919.
He was buried in France.
On Jan. 8, 1921 his remains were returned to Hawk Run, PA. and buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Morrisdale, PA.

Frank BURROWS born 1889 Haverton Hill, Co.Durham
died 31.5.1916 He was a stoker on H.M.S. BROKE
His brother Albert Arthur BURROWS born 1886 Haverton Hill, Co. Durham died 13.9.1919.
He was a prisoner of war for 4 years and then volunteered for service in Russia where he waskilled.

Robert KEMSLEY born about 1884 Hartlepool, Co.Durham
emigrated to Australia. Joined Australian Army.
Killed in France 2.4.1917

Charles Henry WILLOUGHBY born 2.12.1914 Hartlepool, Co. Durham
died 26.6.1942 El Alamein

James AINSLIE born 24th Dec. 1882 Chester
(Father James born West Smethwick Staffs).
He had been in the regular army from 1903 to 1911 and was still
in the reserve, when war declared
He was killed 17th September 1914 at YPRES in France.

Son of Arthur and Sarah Pemberton, 12 Nelson Street,
Congleton, Cheshire.
James was wounded and died on 24th April 1916
His grave is in the Aubingy Communal Cemetery France.

George CULL of Dibble Road, Smethwick, Staffordshire.
Eldest son of George & Maria CULL nee Hadley.
Sapper 486716 470 Field Coy., Royal Engineers.
Born 27th June, 1897 died Sunday 23rd. September, 1917 aged 20 years.
Bur: Wieltje Farm Cemetery, Leper, West - Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Moses SWIFT, Corporal15292 92nd Coy., Machine Gun Corps (Inf)
died on Tuesday 27 June 1916 . He was aged 23 and rests in the Thiepval
Memorial Cemetery in Somme, France.

George SWIFT, Private 8127 8th Bn., North Staffordshire Regiment
died on Sunday 30 December 1917. He was aged 24 and rests in the
Ribecourt British Cemetery in Nord, France.

Staffordshire born, Harry WAKEFIELD, Sergeant 1411732 15 Sqdn., Royal Air
Force Volunteer Reserve, who died in World War II on Sunday 11 April 1943.
He was aged 21 and rests in the Montcornet Military Cemetery in Aisne, France.

William (Bill) PLANT

Son of George and Rose Plant
Private 2nd Bn., South Staffs Regiment
Killed in action, at the age of just 18, at Givenchy
on Wednesday 10th March 1915.
Buried in the Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, Pas de Calais, France

Frank KEYS
Born 1885 West Bromwich
Son of William and Martha Keys
Husband of Ellen and father to Doris, Daisy, Edith and Gladys,
all under the age of 8 when he died.
Brother of Charlotte, who lost her only son and only surviving brother, within two days of each other
during those terrible days on the Somme in July 1916.

Died of wounds on Friday 14th July 1916.
Buried at Serre Road No2 Cemetery, Somme, France.

who died of wounds Aged 35 yrs
On Sunday 28 May 1916
Son of Joseph and late Arabella HALWARD, Cannington, Ontario.
Born Cannington , Ontario , March 19 1881
Interred -Cannington ( All Saints) Anglican Cemetery.
(James' Parents, were both born in Birmingham , WAR, but Joseph Halward
was raised in Griffin's Brook, Selly Oak. They married there in 1873,
prior to emigrating to Cannington Ontario.)

Clement Walter NASH born Selly Oak , WOR, 10th June 1907,
Son of Lottie and Walter Nash, of Lower Hutt, NZ ( previously of Selly Oak)
Died Woodborne Air Base, Blenheim, N Z, September 1943 ,of Meningitis,
while in training with RNZRAF- had enlisted to defend the land of his birth!!
Left a wife and 3 young sons.

William Robert and George Whitefield BOWEN from Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire, who were both killed in the first world war.

Born 1896, Old Hill, Stafford, England
Killed in Action : 8 April 1917, age 21.
at Souchez, Pas de Calais, France
Final resting place: Cabaret - Rouge, British Cemetary

B/134612 Gdsm. Arthur George EDWARDS
21st Armd. Regt., Governor General's Foot Guards, R.C.A.C.
He was born in Old Hill, Staffs but emigrated to Ontario, Canada.
Killed in action on Wednesday 30 August, 1944 in Normandy, France at 22 years of age.
Buried by his comrades at Caen then moved to Calais Canadian War
Cemetery, Leubrighen, France.

Arnold Wilford FAVILL
Lance Corporal 240895, 2nd/6th Battalion., South Staffordshire Regiment.
He died on Thursday 21st March, 1918 at Arras. His body was never found

Samuel BIRCH of
H. M. S. Indefatigable, Royal Navy
who died on Wednesday 31st May 1916 at Jutland. aged 24.

George DORSETT:
Driver.99729, 18th Div. Ammunition Col., Royal Field Artillery.
Died Aged 20 Tuesday 24th July 1917 Brownhills, Staffordshire.
Son of Thomas Edward and Annie Maria DORSETT of Spring Cottage, Lichfield Road, Brownhills.
Remembered with Honour - Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial and St James Church War Memorial, Ogley Hay, Brownhills.
Body never found.

Edward SAGER (SEAGER)
Private.
Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
Reported missing on the first day of the great Somme battle 1st July 1916,
presumed to have been killed on that date.
Born 1885 Bloxwich, son of John and Emma SEAGER.
He lived at Highfields Doncaster having moved from Cornwall Street, Leamore,Walsall where he had served three years with the local territorial.
The same week news was received by his wife of his death, two of their children had also died!

In Memory of my brother, William S. STOKES who didn't live to see his son. Born May 6, 1913, the grandson of Edward Stokes, born Bronygarth, Shropshire, and Mary Ann Hales, born Longton, Staffordshire, who emigrated to America.
William was KIA in France, January 1945. His Sacrifice, and that
of all of those who made the Supreme Sacrifice, have given us the Freedoms which we enjoy today.

Acting Corporal Frank HUECK, born 18 August 1897 at 8 Hallam's Row,
Horninglow, Staffs, served as 12058 Leicestershire Regiment, subsequently 46699 8th Battalion,
The Northumberland Fusiliers.
Died of wounds, 19 June 1917 at the 3rd CCS France, and is buried in
Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
Frank enlisted in Loughborough and is commemorated on the Loughborough Carillon.

Another brother, Albert Henry HUECK also served and returned from the war.

In Memory of Great Uncle Christopher POWELL
born 16th May 1912 at 3 Chapel Street, Spondon
to William Powell and Elizabeth Walklate Powell.
He was raised at 49 Mason Street in Fenton, Staffordshire.
He Served as Corporal 5567859 with the 2nd Battalion of the Wiltshire
Regiment. He died in action on 23 May 1940 at Dunkirk aged 28.
He is buried at Roeux Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

In Memory of LAWRENCE CYPLES Serjeant S/5041642 1 Stat. Depot., Royal Army Service Corps
who died on Monday, 17th June 1940
and is buried at St George's D'oleron Communal Cemetery,
Charente-Maritime, France

In Memory of GEORGE DERRICOTT of East Vale Private 10557
7th Bn., North Staffordshire Regiment who died on Wednesday, 5th April 1916.
Age 32. Son of Abraham Derricott, of 13, Gate St., Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.
Buried at Mesopotamia on The Arabian Peninsular

13th Base Park Coy., Royal Engineers who died on Tuesday, 20th July 1915 at Gallipoli Age 21.

In Memory of Albert Edgar HULSE, died in July 1917, age 19,
from injuries sustained (Gas) during the 2nd Battle of Arras.
He was the son of Henry HULSE and Jane Davenport GOOSTRY of Longton.

In memory of Edgar POWNER. (491931), born 1890; deceased 4 Sep 1917 in Pas de Calais, France. Served in
Great War as Sapper, 118th Railway Company, Royal Engineers
was killed in action and buried in Calais Southern Cemetery,

In Memory of Private John Thomas PLANT Joined the Army at the outbreak of World War One.
Was Private 15515 8th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment.
Wounded in Battle of the Somme.
Buried at Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme, France.

In Memory of James Milner Hulme. James served in the 1st / 5th Batallion of the North Staffordshire Regiment.
He died in action WW1. His service number was private 1682.
He is buried at Loos en Gohelle, Pas de Calais, France.

In Memory of Ernest Josiah Hulme. 4th Battalion of the
Grenadier Guards and was killed in the battle of the Somme.
His service No. was Private 25021. He is buried at Guards' Cemetery, Les Boeufs, Somme, France.

Royal Defence Corps (formerley 17025 of the Northumberland Fusiliers)
Died at sea Thursday 10th October 1918 aged 20
aboard R.M.S. Leinster (mailboat) which was torpedoed and sank in the Irish Sea
on its way from Kingstown, Ireland to Holyhead, Wales by German U-boat.
No grave but the sea, commemorated on Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton,Hampshire.
Son of John Samuel and Elizabeth Lee, Bridge Street, Park Village, Wolverhampton.

Arthur GALLEYMORE born 1921 Wolverhampton.
He served in the South Staffs Regiment. He died in action in France during WW2.

Pte. David WOOD - Number 61541 M.G.C. died of wounds March 8th 1919 - Buried Tunstall Cemetery

John WELLINGS born Burslem - Durham Light Infantry
(formally North Staffs Regiment) Killed in Action 21st September 1914 - France & Flanders
Brother Samuel WELLINGS born Burslem - Prince of Wales Regiment - 27th July 1917, Mesopotamia.
From a Sentinel newspaper report it stated that his only Brother has been killed in action
and that he had three brothers in law on active service,
while a fourth had been wounded and was in hospital.

Remembering John Bingley ELLIS
Born 1st May 1896 Madeley Heath
Killed 30th September 1915 aged 19 years at the Battle of Loos.
Sadly he was found by the lad he joined up with who gave him a rough burial
but took all that would have identified him i.e.his letters, pay book, 'dog-tags' and an identity
bracelet to return to his family, so Uncle Jack has no known grave and is commemorated
on the Loos Memorial in Dud Corner Cemetery.

9496 Corporal George LUNT 2nd Bn North Staffordshire Regiment - 3rd Infantry Brigade
North West Frontier - the 3rd Afghan War
died 14th May 1919 of wounds received at the battle of Bagh Springs, Landi Khotal on the 11th May.
Buried Peshawar. He was 21 years old.

Lance Corporal Percy George BIRCH
1st / 4th Bn., Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry.
Son of Calvin and Charlotte Birch.
Born Wolverhampton 8th October 1892.
Died aged 24 on Thursday 24th August 1916.
Remembered with honour at Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Private William (Billy) FOLLETT
Died of his wounds in hospital in England.
Aged just 19, he had already seen service with the South Wales Borderers in Gallipolli,
and came back straight to the Front in France. He was wounded on his first day of service in France.

Bombardier Elijah MARSH another great uncle. He fought with the Royal Artillery
from 1914 right through until September 1918 when he died at Mericourt L'Abbaye aged just 24.
He was a Sunday School Teacher and Secretary at the Wesleyan Church at Leamore.

Volunteer Leslie PADFIELD.
40th Warwickshire (Birmingham) Bn., Home Guard.
Who died age 21 on Friday 11th April 1941
(Killed in bombing at Smethick Bakery, whilst doing a friends Home Guard Shift)
Buried :- War grave at Smethwick Old Church, Staffordshire.
Son of the late Arthur James (Jim) & Augusta Maria Jane Padfield, Smethwick, Staffordshire

Driver Leslie John PADFIELD
5 Res. M.T. Coy., Royal Army Service Corps.
Who died aged 23 on Satuday 14th November 1942
Remembered:- Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Son of the late Ausin Bird & Lucy Anna Maud Padfield, Waltham Abbey, Essex.

Private Walter George PARFITT
"C" Coy, 1st/4th Bn., Gloucestershire Regiment.
Who died aged 30 on Tuesday, 9th October 1917
Remembered:- Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Son of the late Ben & Sarah Parfitt, Stoke St. Michael, Somerset

Rupert Smith HINDS, Sgt.
Candian Expeditionary Force, 80th Battalion, 75th Battalion and 4th Machine Gun Battalion
He left his leg and youth in France, 1918...we were lucky we got him back
Died November, 1973 in Canada with his family beside him

Kenneth James COX, Flying Officer
410 Sqdn. Royal Canadian Air Force
Died November, 26, 1943 in a mid air collision over England
Buried Brookwood Military Cenetery, Surrey

Jack Alfred BAGNALL was in the trenches at Sommes, Ypres.
He was poisoned by drinking from a poisoned waterhole and invalided home in 1917,
where he underwent major surgery. His health was degraded for the remainder of his life.

In memory of
4916595 Pte Walter John (Jack) HARBACH
1/6th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.
Served in the Militia prior to the outbreak of war, and was
amongst the first troops to embark for France with the BEF.
Evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940.
Killed in the fighting around Caen following D-Day
on 22nd of July 1944, aged 25.
Buried at Tilly-Sur-Seulles Cemetery.

My great uncle WESTON GREY SPOONER was killed in action 9th September 1918
and is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery Belgium.
He was born in Chapel Street Cheadle Staffs to Richard and Lucy Spooner in c1889.

ERIC SIDNEY NOON - Private 5349660 - 2/5 Bn. Leicestershire Regiment,
who died on Friday 3rd December 1943. Age 20.
Cemetery: MINTURNO WAR CEMETERY, ITALY.

Sergeant Isaac Leonard WILLIAMS, 9152, 'A' company, 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.
Born 1893 in Swindon, Staffs, enlisted in 1912,
killed in action, aged 22, on 29 July 1916 at Delville Wood.
Buried at Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-la-Boiselle.
Posthumously awarded the Military Medal.

Private Henry JONES, 19621, 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment.
Born c. 1880, Pattingham, Staffs. Killed in action on the first day of the
Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. No known grave. Commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.

Private Charles CORNS, 9798, South Staffordshire Regiment, born c. 1878 in Wombourne, Staffs,
died of wounds and buried 22 July 1918 at St John's Church, Swindon, Staffs
