Compiler's Notes

The following will abstracts are from volume 8 of the registered wills for the Consistory Court of London. They can be found on LDS film # 0094174, which contains another volume of wills for this court. The volume commences on 8 August 1621 and continues to 10 February 1630 (1631). If a document of particular interest is found, it is recommended that one refer back to the original record, especially as I have not included the date of writing or the date of probate for these wills.

I have modernized and standardized most of the place names and given names, but I have left the surnames in their original forms.

The abbreviations should not cause too much difficulty. Agn = Agnes, chldr = children, Jn = John, overs = overseers, yeo = yeoman, etc. The abbreviation ctz = citizen of London.

The underlining denotes those who were related to the testator but had a different surname.

I have included a locality index which lists the various places outside of Middlesex found within these wills. It should be noted that a very large percentage of these probate records are actually for the County of Essex. This court is not mentioned in Phillimore's Genealogical Atlas, which is a standard reference, and I did not find any of these wills listed in the printed will index for Essex. So these documents may very well provide information that is unknown to many researchers. There are some wills for Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, as well as a number of probate records for those who died in the service of the East India Company.

Any comments or errors can be addressed to myself, Mr Leslie Mahler at lmahler[at]worldnet.att[dot]net

Many thanks to Paul Reed of Salt Lake City, Utah for making me aware of these records.
