Two Chapels-of-Ease (to Lea Parish Church) were built in the town of Portarlington in the late 18th century. The church dedicated to St Michael, was built to serve the English-speaking residents and was consequently widely referred-to as "the English Church". The other, St Pauls, served the French-speaking residents (who were of Huguenot French & Flemish descent) and was known as "the French Church".
The two congregations merged in the late 1887, with St Pauls becoming the main church and St Michaels becoming the Parish Hall.
