The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Magheracross contained the following places:

"MAGHERACROSS, a parish in the barony of Farney, county Monaghan, province of Ulster, Ireland, containing the town of Carrickmacross. It is 7 miles long by 3 broad. The surface comprises a considerable proportion of bog and rock, and several lakes diversify the interior. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Clogher, value £439, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was built at the parish expense in 1779. There are three Roman Catholic chapels, a Presbyterian meeting-house, and several Sunday and day schools."
